Decaf – Irish Coffee

I was in a rural pub in West Cork a few years enjoying a pint when I heard a booming voice at the bar. It sounded like Tom Selleck from Magnum PI and had the moustache to match. A bus full of American tourists had bundled into the pub and said Tom Selleck ringer demanded a “Decaffeinated Irish coffee”.

I never knew such a thing existed and I eagerly anticipated the bartenders response. The bartender didn’t blink an eyelid, turned his back and went about filling the request. Tom Selleck’s doppelgänger gave me a nod and proceeded to announce to me – completely unsolicited about his Irish heritage.

Just as we were about to move on from discussing genealogy to the weather, the bartender put a tumbler of whiskey in front of the Magnum PI ringer. “This isn’t a Decaf Irish coffee”, said the American. The bartender quipped, “I know, I took the caffeine out of it”. The American took one look at the drink, burst into laughter and said, “it’s great to be home”. 😂☘️
