Limited Edition: Legends of Cork
Cork has never been short on characters — a small county with world-sized confidence and some legends that back that up.
Michael Collins:
The “Big Fella” from Clonakilty took on the world’s biggest empire and won Ireland’s independence on December 6th 1921. Only a Corkonian could take on the Brits, outsmart them and make Dev (Éamon de Valera) look bad in the process. Collins exploits were immortalised in the movie ‘Michael Collins’.
Roy Keane:
When Roy Keane left home he turned to his father and said, “Now you are the man of the house”. 😜 Keane was one of the best footballers of his generation. Recognised as Manchester United’s greatest ever captain and a serial winner of just about every trophy in the game – he is a true legend.
Rory Gallagher:
When a reporter asked Jimi Hendrix how it felt to be the best guitarist in world, Hendrix responded, “I don’t know, you’d have to ask Rory Gallagher”. Gallagher was a musical genius who played and manipulated the guitar like he had fifteen fingers on each hand.
Cillian Murphy:
Mr Oppenheimer himself is the only Irish born actor to win an Oscar in a leading role. Of course Murphy being a true Corkonian avoids wearing sunglasses indoors, does his own dishes and brings his own sandwiches to film sets because “they never make them right.” 😂
Graham Norton:
Graham Norton is Bandon’s answer to Jimmy Fallon, only with rapier like wit and plenty of gin. Norton is one of the world’s best chat show hosts, an award winning author and the only Corkonian who can make a sequinned blazer look like a good choice. 😜
Sionia O’Sullivan:
Sonia is Cork’s First Lady. She is one of Ireland’s best ever athletes and the best thing to come out of Cobh since the Titanic. Sonia also ran with my family in Cork Marathon in memory of my Mother, so I will forever be a huge fan. ❤️
