Bedtime
As a child, I was always fascinated by my bedtime. My favourite phrase was “just five more minutes… PLEASE”, swiftly followed by a big NO from my mother and the universal rebuttal of “that’s not fair”. 😂
It was all a game and the prize was seeing how far I could push it!
Enter Granny Hurley. She was the most laid back grandmother a child could have. She brought sweets, told brilliant stories and I never in my life witnessed her losing her temper. My siblings Avril, Damien and I loved her to bits.
She was also a soft touch for staying up late. Us kids sensed a weakness. We misinformed her about our bedtime, begged for more stories and did everything within our small manipulative minds to stay up as late as we could.
My sister Avril (the youngest) was always the first to be carried to bed and my brother Damien (the oldest) would insist on my Granny rubbing his head until he fell asleep.
I was, as Charlie Haughey would famously describe Bertie Aherne, “‘the most devious of them all’. Fuelled by pure sugar, curiosity and a steely eyed determination – I would remain awake until RTE went to sleep. I still remember my parents coming in and there I was staring at RTE test screen.
My tired response to my mother’s insistence of going to bed… “just five minutes…PLLLLL-EASE”. 😂
