In Marymount Hospice in Cork almost fifteen years ago, I said goodbye to my Mam.
She had stage four ovarian cancer and despite defying the doctor’s prognosis – it was her time. 💔
Not long before she passed, she told me that, “she wasn’t a good mother”. I couldn’t be strong in that moment and I broke down in tears. I reassured her of how much I loved her. How much our family loved her. She was the BEST mother, but she couldn’t see it. She was always too hard on herself.
The year after my mother died we found a note amongst the Christmas decorations in the attic. It said, “Happy Xmas my three little babies. I love you and I miss you. X”.
It’s heartbreaking to think how she felt when she wrote that note.
We were still her babies and she wanted us to know how much she loved us.
She once said to me, “you’ll thank me someday”, and I don’t think I ever did because I was simply too young to fully comprehend a Mother’s love.
Thank you Mam ❤️
