Irish people sit alongside the Canadians as the most apologetic nation on earth. By this I mean we apologise for absolutely everything, even if we are not in the wrong.

Comedian Ardal O’Hanlon summed it up best with an experience he had. To paraphrase, Ardal was on a night link bus after a night out some years ago. He made his way to the upstairs of the bus and was confronted by a mugger demanding money at knife point. Ardal reached for his wallet and handed the attacker a five pound night followed by an apology for not having more. The mugger then apologised for robbing him and they both went on their separate ways.

Maybe it’s being a post colonist country, a fear of confrontation or just being overly polite, but us Irish love a good apology 😂😜
