I grew up with two siblings that I love. The oldest is Damien and the youngest is Avril. I am the middle child, meaning that I was neither the guinea pig eldest nor the doted upon youngest. I was the quiet dreamer who lived in my own world.

I always think of us as ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS… a triangle of solving arguments in our own unique ways. Damien’s approach was as subtle as rock through a window, but he was always quick to apologise. Avril was more acerbic and her comments could cut you down very quickly. I was non-confrontational, so I would do anything I could to change the narrative – usually through what I thought was humour!

However, all three of us could be easily be usurped by our mother and THE WOODEN SPOON! She had a tough job dealing with the three of us and was generally very calm, but very seldomly she could justifiably lose the plot.

The threat of the WOODEN SPOON was her go to last resort, followed by, “wait til your father gets home”. The closest she ever got to actually brandishing the wooden spoon would be to put her hand in the cutlery drawer, but the threat was enough to get us in line. 😂

So, whenever an argument began, it always played out like “Rock, Paper, Scissors WOODEN SPOON”!!! 😜😂

… and “wait til your father gets home”. 😂

Fast forward to today and my daughter thinks a wooden spoon is exclusively for cooking. 😜😂
