The Irish language is beautiful. Take the words ‘Pógíní Gréine’, – the Irish for ‘freckles‘, which translates as ‘little kisses of the sun.’
As well as the beauty and poetry of our language, there is also another use for our gorgeous dialect.
When I was a teenager, we had a soccer exchange programme from Ballincollig to Bradford City in England. My two friends from Bradford, Butch and Roman had such thick Yorkshire accents that I once had to translate what they were saying to a middle aged referee from London. For example if there was a glass of Coca-Cola on a table, they would say, “there’s BOP ON’T ABLE”. 🤯
The lads had great craic trying to teach me some of their Yorkshire twang, usually with the results going against me – so I decided to return the favour.
When they arrived in Ireland I plotted my revenge. Initially I lulled them into a false sense of security and taught them “Slainte” (cheers). After my mother reassured them, this was in fact the correct translation, I had them.
The next move was to teach them that the Irish for “thank you”, which according to fifteen year old me was, “Póg Mo Thóin”. 😜😂
Cue the hijinks.
I got a couple of days mileage before the lads finally caught on. CHECK MATE – to adolescent teenage me. 😂
