The original lost boy, Peter Pan is a symbol for maintaining ones childhood sense of adventure and fun. As an adult, I slowly lost sight of this and responsibility became the de-facto driver. When my daughter was born, I was re-introduced to this sense of fun through osmosis. I found myself looking at the world through her eyes and seeing the fun in even the most banal of everyday tasks.
I have a theory that men lose their sense of fun due to conforming to acceptable social etiquette amongst their peers. Having children gives us an excuse to revisit our childhood and see things from their perspective. However, this rediscovery has severe side-effects. The condition known as ‘Dad Jokes’ or as my five year daughter phrases it, “you are embarrassing me Dad” effects nine in every ten fathers – accountants and solicitors are immune!
The main side-effect of this condition is the uncontrolled impulse to make really bad puns! The condition is treatable, but involves a serious commitment to art therapy. I am pursing this remedy with gusto as I am afraid of reaching stage two of this illness – being a total embarrassment. 😜😂
