My five year old daughter thinks that wooden spoons exist solely for cooking. Wooden spoons were dual purpose in my childhood. Yes, they could occasionally be used to cook a delicious meal, but in reality they were mainly used for coercion. Nothing would strike fear in the heart of an Irish child more than the mere mention of your mother “getting the wooden spoon”.

Pre-internet stories of heroism would occasionally spread like wildfire through the school yard. Kids hiding wooden spoons would bring hope to masses. My personal favourite was children threatening to call ‘Child Line’! 😂😂😂
