Calpol Print
As a child I remember falling ill with fondness. Being sick meant a few days off school, flat 7-Up and playing the martyr with a justifiable sense of purpose. It also meant you had to take some medicine. If you were really sick then it was a prescription of antibiotic Amoxycillin – a delicious banana flavoured medicine with a radioactive neon yellow consistency that I imagined was bottled in Chernobyl.
The most common elixir was the gooey pink sugary strawberry goodness that was Calpol. As an imaginative and visual child I thought the word ‘addictive’ would look like a bottle of Calpol if it was an image. Calpol was such a hit with kids that it had a child proof cap. This of course would stop children from overdosing on cough medicine, but also confirmed that said medicine was delicious.
Learning how to bypass this safety feature was a coming of age experience as a child and not drinking the contents of the bottle was a lesson in self-preservation.
As a father of a beautiful five year old girl Calpol has again entered my life. The plastic spoon has been replaced with a plastic syringe, but the same great taste remains. Whilst not abusing a cough medicine, I did on one occasion lose self control and had a game of one for you and one for me. However I did have a valid reason – I think my hair was sore. 😜
