The Free Stayto
On a trip to the North in 2020, I noticed a yellow bag of Tayto in a Tesco Express. My mouth dropped… it was Tayto, but Mr Tayto was different. A shop assistant noticed my stance and asked did I need any help. As soon as I opened my mouth, he stopped me and said with hearty laugh, “we’ve no free Statyos here”. I looked at him as if I was a dog trying to learn a magic trick… bamboozled 🤯
Not knowing what he meant, I asked a local later that day and they explained that the north has “Nordie Tayto and the south has “Free Staytos”.
And much like the rest of Irish history, the tale of the two Tayto companies throws up questions of shared and separate identities. Here is my tribute to the “Free Stayto” 😜
