Foreigners weren’t invented in Ireland until the 1990’s. The Celtic Tiger was roaring and people came from all over the world to live and work in Ireland. Irish people, particularly from small rural towns affectionately dubbed them ‘blowins’.
I have extended family members, friends and clients from abroad and they all have one thing in common. They love Ireland, but it’s tricky for them to learn the colloquialisms and idiosyncrasies that make us unique.
As a thirty-seven year old Irishman I think our way of communicating makes us special. We are natural story-tellers and entertainers. As such we are prone to exaggerate the mundane and make it much more dramatic. To paraphrase Mark Twain, “we don’t let a little fib get in the way of a good story”. 😜😂😂
