Daft Series: COVID House Hunting

The biggest property website in Ireland is called Daft(dot)ie. The tragically funny angle to this is that we have normalised the name ‘daft’ and some of us fail to see the irony of it.

Ireland is currently experiencing a housing crisis due to insufficient supply and artificially inflated house prices. This state of affairs is further exacerbated by strict borrowing measures imposed by the Central Bank to stop another financial crisis. This solution was imposed on a generation that had no hand in the ‘Celtic Tiger’ debacle – with devastating consequences.

For the last decade the Irish Government has looked to the private sector to solve this problem. As the private sector is profit driven it is happy for the supply to be low with an ever increasing demand to push up prices. DAFT!

During COVID house prices increased and first-time buyers began to panic. With a window of six months to draw down an approved mortgage the race was on to secure a property. The lockdown measures prohibited people from viewing properties in person. Combined with steadily increasing prices and a very short supply of houses – the sellers had a field day. Demands to place bids on properties without viewing them in person was normalised. DAFT!

It was ‘Kinder Surprise’ time in the property market. People who would normally base the biggest decision of their lives on logic were making questionable choices out of desperation and scarcity.
